Soil Testing
soil_testing.jpgIn Australia contamination has occurred from mining, metal smelting, leather tanning, underground seepage from petrol tanks, waste dumps, cattle and sheep dipping; and agricultural pesticide use. Naturally occurring minerals are also present in our soil that can affect our health such as uranium, arsenic, lead, chromium and asbestos.

It is estimated that there are as many as 200,000 contaminated soil sites within Australia

(Langley. A, 2002).

Underground watercourses and wind can carry contaminated soil for long distances from their place of origin. Soil is also often purchased from unknown, possibly contaminated origins.

The main route of soil entry into humans is through ingestion; mainly by children who are very susceptible to the health concerns of contaminated soils such as the heavy metals; lead, cadmium, chromium and arsenic as well as petroleum products, pesticides and solvents.
